Hi, I am a little bit concerned about my never ending urge to eat. It?s very frustrating to have had a very nice meal and as soon as I clear the table and finish washing the dishes I feel hungry again - or at least am thinking at the next thing I should eat... I try to eat fruits, yogurts and drink water/coffee to set my hunger/urge off. I am sure we are not talking about real hunger but about my mind being set to eat continuously but I don't know how to put an end to it. I read a lot about this subject and managed to learn lots of tricks to set my mind off the food but I am kind of desperate as none is working with me. I wonder if I should see a doctor or it is just my mind which really has to pay all the effort. Thank you
Hi
You are right to realize this is not actual hunger but simply “head hunger”. Unfortunately it is triggered by the concept of being “on a diet” – you’ve got locked into a feeling of deprivation that means food screams out for you to eat it even when you probably wouldn’t have been bothered before.
Try to be positive and accept that with the new tools you have been learning you are probably doing much better than you give yourself credit for. You don’t say if you are losing weight, maintaining it or putting it on. But any time you are not putting it on you can consider it a success.
Perhaps a couple of things I would suggest would be to plan more carefully in advance a string of meals and snacks which will see you through the day. Combine this with a strict approach to keeping your food environment less “toxic” (e.g. don’t over-cater so there are seconds to finish up, and don’t have tempting food lying around etc.) and I think you should start to get on top of this. I think it’s unlikely that you will need to see a doctor and that actually your experience is quite common if you can draw ay comfort from that.
