Hiya, I'm wondering if I'll lose weight faster if I cut out more carbs from my diet and eat more proteins. I exercise regularly and work crazy shifts in a physical job so I definitely need a certain amount of carbohydrate for energy. I'm managing to stick to the daily cals but was just wondering if this might speed up weight loss? None of the carb heavy things I eat are high in fat, in fact totally opposite and I mainly stick to wholegrains when I do. I'm 30 years of age weigh about 10 1/2 stone and 5' 5" I do carry quite a bit of muscle. Thanks for any wisdom you can impart! Jo
Hi Jo,
Well you are certainly eating the healthy type of wholegrain carbs and you are right that you need a certain amount of carbs in your diet if you exercise regularly and have a physical job. Carbs are the main source of fuel for our bodies and without enough of these you will soon feel lethargic, tired and very hungry!
Without knowing the details of your diet it is hard for me to know if you should reduce your carb intake, so let me give you some guidelines. The healthy recommendation is that around 50-55% of our calories should come from carbs, around 15% protein and approx. 30-35% (good) fats. Check your diet is in-line with this and, if not, adjust accordingly.
Sometimes, reducing carbs with our evening meal can increase weight loss. As we tend to use less energy during the evening, I feel comfortable recommending this. However, if this is when you exercise, don’t cut back too much as you need your energy for this.
However, if you are sticking to your daily calorie targets are you say you are, I really wouldn’t worry too much. Keep doing what you are doing and I am sure you will soon see the benefits. All the best!
