I like to have a fresh juice each day but am unsure how to count the calories. I use 4 carrots and two apples and have been adding as whole fruit and veg to my daily count- is this ok?
Hi Julia,
The very short answer to your question is yes - you have been adding it correctly, however I would just add a few comments.
Firstly, juicing is an excellent way of adding nutritients to your diet in an easy and tasty way. There are so many different juice recipes available, and of course experimenting can also bring some interesting results! By juicing raw fruit, raw vegetables, leafy greens, nuts, berries and wheat grass, you are extracting vital nutrients that can directly affect your health and wellbeing, in fact the nutrients can be absorbed within 30 minutes by the body so you can immediate enjoy the benefits including a sense of vitality and energy.
Do note however that with juicing, you are not including all of the fibre content that the fruit or vegetable includes whole, so try to include this in your diet some other way. For most vegetables there is little pulp leftover compared with fruit, the amount of 'wastage' will depend on the juicer you have and the fruit/veg you use. Carrots are excellent for including in the juice recipes and generally vegetables are richer in minerals than fruit which is another reason to include them.
With regards to how to enter a home prepared juice in your diary, the best way is to create a recipe using the Meals/Recipes sections of the website:
1. Go onto the website and click on the 'Meals/Recipes' tab in the top navigation bar. This is your own personal Recipe Book.
2. Click on the button which says' Create New Meal / Recipe'.
3. Type in the name of your recipe e.g. 'Carrot & Apple Juice', the number of servings (glasses) it makes and select the meal occasion from the drop down menu e.g. 'Breakfast'.
4. Then use the 'Add Ingredients' panel on the left to start adding your ingredients. This works in exactly the same way you add food to your diary.
5. So type in for example 'Carrot' into the Text Search box. Click on the serving size you want to add it to your recipe. OR you can enter the exact weight by clicking on the 'Add Weight' option. A box will appear at the bottom - choose grams, ounces or mls from the drop down and enter the amount.
6. Then add the next ingredient, for example type into the Text Search box 'Apple'. Select or enter the specific weight. Click on it to add it to your recipe.
7. And the same for the next ingredient until you have entered everything. When you've finished adding everything, press the 'Save Meal' button and then 'Back to My Meals'.
8. To find the recipe again, click on 'Breakfast'. You add a serving (glass) of this directly to your Food Diary by clicking on the link which says 'Add 1 serving to Food Diary'. And of course, once it is appearing in your Food Diary, you can click on the heart icon to save it into your 'Favourites' for quick and easy retrieval next time.
I hope this helps, happy juicing!
