Q.

Dairy intolerant and craving sugar

I have just been diagnosed with a high intolerance to cows milk so I am now on soya milk and trying to cut out all diary products. I am also taking probiotics. However I feel this has resulted in me putting on weight as I seem to crave sweet food more now. I also feel very tired. Any suggestions on what to eat to stop the cravings but still avoid milk?

Although you feel the two are clearly related, I can?t think of any nutritional reason why there should be a link between cutting out dairy foods and increased sweet cravings. To have put on weight you must have increased the calories you are consuming or reduced the calories you are using up in exercise - maybe a look at your diary might be able to shed light on what is going wrong?

To try to beat sugar cravings you can try these tips:

*Eat little and often

*Swap to eat slower-releasing versions of carbohydrates - e.g. grainy bread, non-sugary high fibre cereals wholewheat pasta, brown rice. These should replace the white or more processed versions.

* Eat a couple of portions of protein a day, such as lean meat, fish or quorn.

*Try a magnesium supplement - some women find it helps with cravings, particularly if they are PMS based.

*Make sure you get your 5-a-day fruit and veg and have some fruit on hand for if you feel a sugar craving coming on.

I hope these suggestions help. If not feel free to contact me again!
