Q.

Am I addicted to apples?

Okay, I know this can't be good and I need some advice. I regularly eat about 7 apples a day. I snack on them at my desk when I want a sugar hit, to stop me from eating biccies, when I'm stressed or bored. In terms of my eating habits, I tend to have Oats so Simple, a yogurt and an apple for breakfast, maybe one or two apples as a snack. Lunch is the same big carton of soup every day, maybe with some ham and crackers, followed by the rest of the apples through the afternoon. In the evening I tend to eat salads and vegetables followed by yogurt as its all my calories will allow. Although I am also always about 200 - 300 cals over every day, more at the weekend. At the weekends, I tend to fall 'off the wagon' and drink and eat what i like - gaining and losing the same few pounds depending on how bad I've been. I do about 3 spin classes or jogs a week, as well as maybe one weights session. Am I addicted to apples? Or sugar, or just the practice of eating in general? I think I stress eat at work and having an apple is like a break as I can't leave my desk. I get really bad cravings if I don't have one - even if I know it'll make my tummy hurt. I've been like this for about four years and it really feels like groundhog day!! I really want to eat better and finally lose the last stone I've been carrying around for about six years. Apologies for the long post, but any help or advice would be really, really, really appreciated! I feel like I am going in circles, trying to be healthy and lose weight and then feeling bad when I don't. xx

Our expert says...

Hi there,

Well, you have got yourself in a bit of a pickle about all of this, haven’t you?!  First of all, can I ask you to stop beating yourself up about this.  There are a lot worse foods that you could be over eating than apples and at least these are a natural healthy food with plenty of vitamins and minerals and fibre.  So, please stop feeling so guilty about it.

Having said that, I do think that it would be good for you to satisfy your sweet tooth with some other fruits, which would provide variety and other nutrients, and also break what I believe is really just a habit that you have got into.  Much of what we eat tends to be from habit and this is particularly true when we are trying to lose weight and we find foods that we think are ‘safe’ and that we are comfortable with.

So, my suggestion for you is to try 2 new fruits a week until you have a good selection that you can eat alongside one apple each day. There are so many to choose from in the summer, you shouldn’t be short on choice!

I would also recommend that when you eat fruit as a snack, you don’t eat it on its own, as it can raise blood sugar levels too quickly causing them to fall and create further hunger and cravings.  Eating fruit with a couple of nuts or a few seeds, a cracker or oat cake, fills you up for much longer and provides a much more substantial snack.  Try it and see what I mean!
